Media Invitation: Surrey High Sheriff supports young people engaged in sport
Thursday 8 May 2008
Sally Varah, the new High Sheriff of Surrey, will be visiting UniSPORT at the University of Surrey on Saturday 10 May, 10.00 a.m. - 12.00 p.m, to see first-hand the wide range of sports activities available to children from all over Surrey. The visit fits in well with the High Sheriff’s key themes for this Shrieval year, one of which encourages young people to engage in sport to build self esteem and lead healthy lives.
For six Saturdays during term time, UniSPORT provides a high quality physical and social experience for children, and their siblings, who do not get much of an opportunity to engage in sport during the week. It is supported by a variety of volunteers – some Surrey students, some graduates, some University staff, some retired staff and others from the wider community. The rules are simple: - Forget what you cannot do, concentrate on what you can do and have a great time!
During the visit centre staff will give the High Sheriff the grand tour of UniSPORT. She will also meet children involved in the main sports activities which include trampolining, climbing and cheerleading.
The High Sheriff comments: "I am keen to see the ways that UniSPORT – supported by its team of volunteers – is sharing the existing facilities at the University of Surrey with children from a wide range of backgrounds – often those with special needs. If this is what the University can offer now, it is exciting to think what opportunities will be available once the Surrey Centre for Sport is built on campus – and the huge range of sporting opportunities that will bring to the wider community, with some of the best facilities in the South East region."|
UniSPORT is the sport and recreation department at the University of Surrey. It is open to all students and staff at the University as well as the local community in Guildford. The department is operated from two main sites, the Sports Centre (Stag Hill) and the Varsity Centre (Manor Park) offering a huge variety of sports, dance and exercise opportunities.
