Salters' Festival of Chemistry at the University of Surrey
Thursday 1 May 2008
56 students from 14 schools in the local area will enjoy a fun-filled day of chemistry at the Salters' Festival of Chemistry to be held at the University of Surrey on Wednesday 7 May. Each school will be represented by a team of four 11-13 year olds.
During the morning the teams will take part in a competitive, hands-on, practical activity, in which they will use their forensic chemistry skills to solve a crime. In the afternoon, they will be challenged to follow in Harry Potter's footsteps and be Chemical Magicians, creating a range of exciting tricks. This will be followed by a fun lecture, with lots of bangs and flashes by the university's resident chemical magician, Professor Slade.
The day will end with a Prizegiving at which the winning teams will be awarded cash prizes for their schools and all participants will be given individual fun prizes and participation certificates.
The Salters' Festivals of Chemistry are an initiative of The Salters' Institute, whose aim is to promote the appreciation of chemistry and related sciences among the young. The Festival at the University of Surrey is one of a series of forty-eight Festivals which are taking place at Universities throughout the UK and Ireland between March and June 2008.
