Surrey students celebrate the festival of colours
Monday 7 April 2008
University of Surrey students covered each other with bright green, yellow and blue powder as they danced along to music in celebration of Holi, the Hindu festival of colours.
Hosted by the Indian Students' Association at the University, the event celebrated the arrival of spring and the passing of winter, allowing students to have a colour fight with a dyed calcium powder called 'rang'. The event gave Indian students a chance to celebrate their religious and ethnic heritage.
Hindu Indians celebrate the first day of Holi by lighting a bonfire in the evening upon the arrival of the full moon. The bonfire is symbolic of the burning of Holika, a character in Hindu Mythology.
