Media Invitation: Evolving synthetic societies: a workshop

Tuesday 22 January 2008

The University of Surrey cordially invites members of the media to participate at the above workshop which has been organised to mark the end of the NEW TIES project. The workshop will be held at the Hotel de Gouden Leeuw, Leiden in the Netherlands (20 minutes from Schiphol International Airport) on Monday and Tuesday 25-26 February 2008.

The NEW TIES project was created to develop an artificial society using computer programming that develops agents – or adaptive, artificial beings – that have independent behaviours. The project is the first of its kind to attempt to develop a large-scale and highly complex computer-based society. The project's results may have larger implications for information technologies design, evolutionary computing systems, artificial intelligence and linguistics.

The project's goal is to evolve an artificial society capable of exploring and understanding its environment through cooperation and interaction.

The workshop programme will include invited talks, a summary of the work done in the project, and discussion on the prospects for the creation of synthetic societies and what they can be used for.

The workshop will be immediately followed by a 'hands on' tutorial session for those who would like to learn about the NEW TIES platform in more detail.

Representatives are available for interviews both on and prior to the event.
