National Science and Engineering Week 2008 at the University of Surrey

Tuesday 18 March 2008

The Educational Liaison Centre at the University of Surrey helped ensure that a busy and varied contribution was made to National Science & Engineering week this year. The week aims to celebrate science and engineering and their importance in our lives. Subject-specific workshops for local school groups and general access lectures for the wider public were hosted at the University throughout the week.

Three major evening lectures attracted nearly 600 visitors to the university. Mike Milne from Framestore CFC, the largest visual effects and computer animation studio in Europe, spoke about Movie Magic. Mike’s team at Framestore made the landmark BBC television series ‘Walking with Dinosaurs’ and he gave a visually stunning insight into the incredible work that goes on behind the scenes when bringing these concepts to life. He kept the audience enthralled and numerous questions followed his presentation.

With the help of an expert panel, Professor Jim Al-Khalili chaired a debate on the contentious area of genetic screening. A number of myths surrounding the role of DNA were laid to rest and the ethical minefield associated with genetic screening was hotly debated. Finally, with young athletes working towards the 2012 Olympics, Dr. Sue Lanham-New and Dr. Judy Lawrence presented a fascinating insight into the research and practicalities surrounding the nutritional challenge of eating for present and future health.

The Physics, Chemistry and Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering departments also helped to facilitate hands-on workshops for groups of secondary school students. With topics ranging from "The Science of Vampires" to "Are Aliens Left-handed?" science fact was unravelled from science fiction. A number of local schools including Guildford County, Rodborough, Glebelands, Howard of Effingham, Farnham Heath End and Collingwood, Camberley, participated. The University’s flight simulator, jet engine and wind tunnel helped bring the excitement of science to life in the aerospace workshop.

Science & Engineering Week is nationally promoted by the British Association for the Advancement of Science and gives the University an excellent opportunity to raise aspirations and grow demand in the next generation of young people for study in these vital areas.
