Nikolai Demidenko piano
His extraordinary intimacy with the piano, which withholds no secrets of keyboard brilliance or expressive colouring from him, maximises the potential in the scoring, however modest or extravagant, of whatever he chooses to play – The Times
Beethoven Sonata No 14 in C sharp minor, Op 27 No 2 Moonlight
Sonata No 27 in E minor, Op 90
Schumann Sonata in F sharp minor, Op 11
Nikolai Demidenko returns for his final concert at the University this academic year with a programme underpinned with emotion. Beethoven's Sonata No 14 ‘Quasi una fantasia’ ( Almost a fantasy) is more commonly known by its popular name of Moonlight Sonata, suggested by the reflected moonlight off Lake Lucerne. The Sonata is one of Beethoven's most popular works and is dedicated to his pupil, 17-year-old Countess Giulietta Guicciardi, whom he is reputed to have loved. Schumann's arresting and majestic Sonata in F sharp minor Op 11 was described by the composer to his beloved Clara Wieck as ‘a cry from my heart to yours’.
