…Under A Bushel – Mixed media exhibition by staff and students of the University of Surrey
Wednesday 13 February 2008
Artistic lights are once again given an opportunity to shine in the third exhibition by staff and postgraduate students at the University of Surrey. Works of art will be displayed in the Lewis Elton Gallery between Tuesday 26 February and Thursday 26 March.
…Under a Bushel features ceramics, paintings photographs, textiles and drawings. Some of the exhibitors, such as Assistant Arts Administrator, Jo Baker, have developed their skills in painting and drawing and pottery courses run by the University’s Arts Office. Ako Danes, who teaches Japanese classes on the Languages for All programme, is well known locally for her Chinese brush paintings. Frans de Leij, Viv Crawshaw and Carolyn Eley, are also regular contributors to exhibitions. Hilary Underwood is an art historian and former assistant curator of the Watts Gallery, Compton. Currently teaching levels 1 and 3 of the University’s BA Humanities degree, her carefully observed classical drawings demonstrates fine draughtsmanship. Andrea Bellet, Students’ Union Design & Media Assistant, shows the creative potential in the manipulation of more contemporary digital media. Much of the photography has been submitted by members of a newly founded staff and student Photography Society.
The exhibition will be opened by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Christopher Snowden, at the private view on Monday 25 February.
The Lewis Elton Gallery has a dynamic schedule with a new exhibition approximately every three weeks. Exhibitors are often nationally and internationally known artists. Private views are sociable occasions providing opportunities to engage with artists, business people and others from the local community.
