Allan Wells Sports Lecture – An Evening with Sir Trevor Brooking

Wednesday 13 February 2008

The University of Surrey cordially invites members of the media to the 2nd Annual Allan Wells Sports Lecture – An Evening with Sir Trevor Brooking – on Thursday 13 March 2008.

Sir Trevor became Director of Football Development at The Football Association in January 2004. He signed for West Ham United as a professional player in 1967 and remained at the club for the whole of his career until retiring in 1984. He made 635 appearances and scored 102 goals for 'The Hammers', winning The FA Cup with them in 1975 and 1980. He played 47 times in England's midfield, scoring five goals and featuring in the 1980 European Championship and 1982 World Cup.

Sir Trevor received an MBE in 1981, a CBE in 1999 and, most recently, a knighthood from the Queen. In recent years he has been particularly well known for his match commentating and summarising for BBC Television and BBC Radio 5 Live. He has also run coaching courses for schoolboys and been involved in sports promotional work.

The Lecture is named after Allan Wells MBE who won the gold medal for the 100m at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. He was the first Briton to do so since 1924. He is also an ambassador for the 2012 London Olympic Games. Shortly after winning his Olympic medal, Allan joined the University of Surrey. Allan has remained at Surrey as a dedicated member of staff for more than 23 years.

This event is in support of the Surrey Centre for Sport campaign - http://www.surreycentreforsport.org.uk/  The Centre is due for completion by the end of 2009 and will be the largest of its kind in the South East of England. It will benefit not only the University and the local community but will also provide a venue for training and competition at regional and national level.
