Guildford prepares for worldwide welcome
Monday 7 January 2008
Staff and volunteers at a UK charity are bracing themselves for the arrival of hundreds of young people from around the world for a special three-day event at the University of Surrey. The event is truly international, and will see young volunteers from New Zealand and Germany mingling with Australians, Russians and South Africans.
The volunteers have been brought to the UK by Reading-based charity Gap Activity Projects, and will spend up to a year on a variety of different projects around the country. The aim of the event is to provide an introduction to life in the country, and to help the youngsters feel at home. Chief Executive, Belinda Coote, says the three days will be unique:
"This event is really very special. Having the opportunity to bring young people from such diverse global backgrounds to the UK is a real privilege. I hope they benefit from their experience in the UK as much as we enjoy welcoming them to the country."
Over the coming months, the volunteers will be giving their time to help in a number of institutions across the UK, including care homes, outdoor camps and schools. For many it will be their first time in the UK and most of them will be here for at least six months. The event takes place at the University of Surrey in Guildford between the 7-9 January 2008.
