Exciting, educational, uplifting…enjoy an evening of Indian dance and music at the University of Surrey

Thursday 9 October 2008

On Wednesday, October 22 the University of Surrey is pleased to welcome back acclaimed performer and choreographer Sonia Sabri to perform her new show Parallels. Featuring evocative live music from an ensemble of musicians on sitar, harmonium, and vocal, with the internationally renowned maestro Ustad Sarvar Sabri on tabla, Parallels offers a beautifully intimate crafting of dance and live music, which will appeal to both music and dance enthusiasts.

Sonia Sabri is acclaimed as one of the brightest and most versatile British born dancer-choreographers of today and her innovation within her form was recently recognised on the contemporary dance scene with her commission for The Place Prize and winning the Bonnie Bird New Choreography Award 2006.

Sonia’s new show, Parallels, a solo mixed bill of cutting-edge contemporary and classical dance showcases the range of her work; the first half comprises three new contemporary Kathak solos; and the second presents the best of classical Kathak, highlighting the origins and context of the earlier contemporary explorations.

"I wanted to first show the ‘branches and leaves’ of my contemporary work, which I have been developing over a number of years and then in the second half delve to the ‘roots’ of the dance form by sharing the classical artistry that remains at the heart of the work" (Sonia Sabri)

Tickets are just £7.50 (£3 for students) and can booked from the Box Office on 01483 686 876. The performance will take place at 7.30pm in the PATS Dance Studio on the University of Surrey’s Stag Hill Campus, Guildford, GU2 7XH. Expect an educational journey from contemporary to classical and east to west, an exciting exploration of Indian culture…"an uplifting crescendo of music and dance".

"The word ‘solo’ does not do justice…there is so much happening simultaneously: the intense rhythms of her body percussion…graceful, repetitive and occasionally explosive movement, orchestrated with elegant hands and captivating facial expression".

(Graham Watts, ballet.co.uk)

"Cool, sharp brilliance…one of the greatest talents of contemporary Indian dance". (Ballet Tanz)

"Fiery, exuberant, uplifting…in the right hands, Kathak can even be funky".
