University of Surrey Symphony Orchestra and Choir perform Mahler's Resurrection Symphony
Wednesday 13 February 2008
Gustav Mahler's overwhelming and dramatic Symphony No 2 will be performed by the University Symphony Orchestra and Choir on Saturday, 16 February at 7.30 p.m. in the serene setting of Guildford Cathedral.
This performance features many of the brightest young musicians in the South-east, conducted by the dynamic Russell Keable, performing Mahler's powerfully expressive second symphony. During his lifetime Mahler knew success as a conductor, but his creative energies erupted in symphony and song with astonishing power. Arnold Schoenberg wrote ‘The first time I heard Mahler’s Second Symphony I was seized, especially in certain passages, with an excitement which expressed itself even physically, in the violent throbbing of my heart. And I was overwhelmed, completely overwhelmed’.
The brass section comes to the fore in the third movement, "In Ruhig Fliessender Bewegung". In the triumphant final movement, "Im Tempo Des Scherzos - Wild Herausfahrend", the choir finally gets their chance to join the orchestra in a cascade of increasing climaxes, building towards its spectacular ending.
Tickets available in advance from the University Box Office at Senate House : 01483 686876 or at the door from 6.45 p.m.
