Symphony Orchestra full of sunshine and cheer on a chilly autumn evening

Wednesday 5 November 2008

University of Surrey Symphony Orchestra and Choir present their annual autumn concert on Saturday 22 November.

Building on their triumphant performance of Mahler’s Second Symphony in February, the University of Surrey Symphony Orchestra will perform one of the 19th Century’s most exciting and dramatic symphonies, Brahms’ Second Symphony. The concert will also feature extracts from Lehár’s ever-popular The Merry Widow.

From its warmly lyric opening to the exuberant finale, the bright and buoyant symphony will offer a warm glow on a chilly autumn evening. Full of sunshine and good cheer, the composer once remarked, “in the course of the winter I will let you hear a symphony which sounds so cheerful and delightful that you will think I wrote it especially for you.” The orchestra, consisting of University students and staff, and conducted by Russell Keable, will certainly not disappoint.

One of the most popular operettas of all time, Lehár’s The Merry Widow, with its traditional Viennese charm and elegance, will provide a lighter half to the evening and an opportunity to hear some favourite melodies from the world of operetta, including the famous ‘Vilia’ song.

Tickets are £7.50, £3 students, and can be booked from the University Box Office on 01483 686876. The concert will take place in the University Great Hall on the University of Surrey’s Stag Hill Campus, Guildford, GU2 7XH, at 7:30 p.m.
