OBE for Surrey's Professor Jim Al-Khalili

Jim Al-Khalili, Professor of Physics at the University of Surrey has been appointed as Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen's Birthday Honours List, for services to physics.

Jim has worked hard to promote Physics and popularise science as well as maintain an active role in teaching and research in his field of theoretical nuclear physics. He was promoted in October 2006 to a joint Chair in Physics and in the Public Engagement in Science.

Commenting on the award, Jim said: "This wonderful honour is not only satisfying at a personal level but is an acknowledgement of the importance of communicating scientific ideas to the public. In particular, it vindicates the faith the University of Surrey has shown in me by giving me my Chair in the Public Engagement in Science."

Jim is also author of several popular science books and appears regularly on radio and television, most recently presenting ATOM on the BBC. In 2007, he was awarded the Royal Society Michael Faraday Prize for Science Communication.
