Royal Society Public Lecture

Tuesday 18 August 2009

On 7 August 2009, Professor Ravi Silva of the University of Surrey presented the Royal Society Kan Tong Po public lecture entitled ‘Nanotechnology for Green Energy’, at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

In the lecture, Professor Silva illustrated the delicate balance that currently exists between energy usage and climate. He showed that our ever-increasing requirement for creature comforts not only uses large amounts of energy but also wastes a great deal as heat and inefficiencies. Nanotechnology was shown as a vital new technology that could ensure better energy capture from the sun and more efficient use of the energy output.

Professor Silva is in Hong Kong as part of the Royal Society Kan Tong Po Visiting Professorship, giving public lectures to encourage better dialogue between scientists in Hong Kong and those in the UK and USA. He is Director of the Advanced Technology Institute and is at the forefront of many practical applications of nanotechnology, helping to set up the UK Nanotechnology Task Force.

Keith Robson, Director of Research and Enterprise Support at the University of Surrey commented “Professor Silva’s work is a marvellous example of world-leading research which also has direct benefits to industry and society. His spin-out company Surrey NanoSystems is already leading the way in fabricating next generation devices for the semiconductor industry and we anticipate that his work in the field of enhanced energy efficiency will have even greater commercial and societal impact.”
