Guildford to be UK’s science centre from 5-10 September
Always a centre for cutting edge science, technology and engineering, the University of Surrey will welcome over 350 experts from across Britain to Guildford between 5 and 10 September as hosts of the 2009 British Science Festival.

Contributing around 40 events to Festival, leading research from the University of Surrey will feature strongly among the many showcases throughout the week. From an interactive presentation on the latest technologies in hybrid and electric vehicles to an exploration of how dinosaurs might have looked given time to evolve into an ‘intelligent’ species, the university will offer an event to suit any visitor’s interest.

Other highlights at the Guildford campus will include ‘Particles in Space’, which explores the Nodus Building that houses the Ion Beam Centre using dance, film and theatrical performance. An exhibition that explores what might have happened if dinosaurs hadn’t died out, “The Art of the Dinosauroids” is hosted by the Lewis Elton Gallery, and “Time Machines”, taking a look behind the scenes of ITV’s hit show Primeval is taking place in the Duke of Kent Building that features in the show. Topical issues, such as whether there is now too much money in sport, the effects of the credit crunch on crime, and the science of clean drinking water will also be explored, as will the incredible contribution of nuclear physics to human development a century since its first experiments.

University of Surrey Vice-Chancellor, Professor Christopher Snowden, said:

“The University of Surrey is delighted to be hosting the 2009 British Science Festival, and as a leading institution for research in the sciences feel that it is a hugely appropriate setting. Among a huge number of fascinating exhibits, and presentations from the country’s top researchers, the University of Surrey’s work will be extremely prominent. We encourage people from across the county to take up this incredible opportunity to learn more about the world around us.”
