Appointment of Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Development

The University of Surrey is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Gillian Nicholls as the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Development. She will take up the post at the University in January 2010.

Professor Nicholls is currently Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at the University of Salford. She has previously held the posts of Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Student Experience at the University of Durham and Director of King’s Institute of Learning and Teaching at King’s College London, which she also founded. Professor Nicholls is not a newcomer to Surrey and was promoted to post of Professor of Education in 2000 after joining from Canterbury Christ Church University in 1997. She has a reputation as a leading educationalist and is the author of a number of books, speaking regularly at international conferences. She has considerable experience working with HEFCE and the QAA as well as with secondary education bodies including SCAA and QCA.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Christopher Snowden said: “I am delighted to welcome Professor Nicholls to Surrey. She has exactly the expertise we were seeking to further develop the teaching, learning and student experience elements of the University.”
