Two awards for Surrey RAG team

Tuesday 15 September 2009

The University of Surrey Students’ Union’s RAG team have won two awards at the National RAG conference this year.

RAG stands for Raising and Giving, and the group holds fun and exciting fundraising events around campus, to raise money for a variety of charities. RAG has been dormant at Surrey for some years, but in 2008 a new committee decided to restart it and give it a new lease of life.

The RAG conference 2009 took place in early September at Bournemouth University, hosted by Bournemouth RAG. Over 30 RAG groups from Universities across the UK attended.

Surrey RAG won the award for 'Best Young RAG', which is for groups who have been in existence for less than five years. They also won 'Best Small RAG', which is an award for RAG groups which raise under £30,000. This is a fantastic achievement, and very well deserved as this was Surrey RAG’s first year of existence for some time, and they managed to raise over £12,000.

RAG hopes to make next year bigger and better still, with a Traffic Light Disco planned for 12 October, and a RAG week lined up for the second semester. Their aim is to attend next year’s conference as a Medium Sized RAG, which is a group that raises over £30,000.
