Wake up and Smell the Coffee
Monday 7 September 2009
The University of Surrey is pleased to announce screenings of a film entitled “Wake up and Smell the Coffee”, as part of the British Science Festival 2009. This event takes place at the INTECH planetarium, Winchester, Thursday 10 September, screenings 10.30 a.m.-3.15 p.m.
“Wake up and Smell the Coffee” is a short, 3D animated film about the stimulating effects of caffeine on the human body. It describes the journey of caffeine as it travels through the gut and into the bloodstream, crosses cell walls and finally interacts with neurons in the brain. Created primarily as a resource for AS and A2 biologists, the film will also be accessible to younger students due to its visual appeal. It will also be of interest to everyone who likes coffee!
Caffeine is one of the most commonly used psychoactive drugs in the world, but is not regarded in the same light as other controlled substances. It is available in many products, from coffee to chocolate to carbonated beverages. These products are aggressively marketed to young and old alike.
This fulldome immersive cinema experience has been created by scientists and animators at the University of Surrey, with backing from SEEDA and The British Science Association. Contributions come from examiners of major UK exam boards and a unique soundscape will compliment the visual impact of the film.
Tickets, which cost £4.50 are available on the door at INTECH, please see the British Science Festival website for further ticketing information:
