Surrey’s MA Translation joins European network...
Tuesday 22 September 2009
The University of Surrey is pleased to announce that the MA Translation programme has been accepted into the ‘European Master’s in Translation’ (EMT) network. The acceptance recognises Surrey’s commitment to providing the highest-quality training in preparing students for professional practice. The network’s inaugural meeting will take place in Brussels in December 2009.
The commissioning of the EMT network comes after the need was recognised for a European market of highly skilled translators to match growing multilingual communication needs. The network has been welcomed by academics as it provides a quality label for translator training in higher education institutions, promoting the exchange of best practice between institutions and enhancing teaching standards.
Leonard Orban, the European Commissioner for Multilingualism, said: “Europe needs high-quality university training for translators in all languages to secure a supply of skilled professionals. The EMT network will contribute to raising the standards of translator training in the EU and fostering cooperation and exchanges between universities offering translation courses.”
The MA Translation was one of thirty four programmes selected, including only five from the UK, from ninety three applications Europe-wide. The Surrey programme will be a member for an initial period of four years, during which time it will be able to use the title ‘Member of the EMT network’.
