University of Surrey joins global celebration of good mental health

Thursday 8 October 2009

As a leader in Mental Health Nursing and research, the University of Surrey will join millions of people across the globe in celebrating the Mental Health Foundation’s annual World Mental Health Day, which takes place on Saturday 10 October.

The day will see diverse fund and awareness-raising efforts for the benefit of worthy causes in the sector, with staff at the University of Surrey taking part in the national ‘Tea and Talk’ campaign to publicise mental health issues.

As many as one in three people are thought to experience some form of mental health problem in their life, and the University of Surrey has a long-established commitment to training world class professionals in the field through its Mental Health Nursing degree programme. Mental Health Nursing is an exciting, ever-changing branch of nursing which aims to help patients find meaning, purpose and enjoyment regardless of the nature of their psychological or psychiatric problems

Kevin Acott, branch leader for Mental Health Nursing at the University of Surrey, said: “At the University of Surrey, we encourage our students to develop the skills and knowledge they will need work to alongside people with a whole range of problems that are causing them difficulties.”

Mental health care has changed dramatically in the last few years. We are now seeing more recognition for mental health problems, improved treatments, and a more positive attitude towards helping people who are struggling to make sense of their world.

Working in one of the most complex, demanding and satisfying areas of nursing, mental health nurses function as specialists within multi-disciplinary teams alongside people with a whole range of difficulties including depression, anxiety disorders, psychoses and drug and alcohol problems.

The University of Surrey offers a range of courses in Health and Social Care at undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development level. Those interested in Mental Health Nursing courses can attend an open day on World Mental Health Day (Saturday 10th), at which there will be opportunities to speak to departmental staff, tour the facilities and learn more about nursing.
