Surrey students call in financial experts at Money Week
Thursday 5 November 2009
The University of Surrey will be hosting an inaugural Money Week for students from Monday 02 to Friday 06 November in the Lecture Theatre Concourse from 11:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. each day.
Originally an American idea, Money Weeks have recently been run to great effect in the UK by money advisers associated with ‘Money Doctors’, an FSA-backed project to inculcate financial capability life skills. The main aim of the week is to help students on financial matters. Examples range from how to budget, avoiding expensive debt and how to save money.
Money Week stands, manned by Money Doctors and also by a wide array of experts from the community and covering all sorts of money themes, will be set up every day. Lunch hour talks and workshops will take place in an adjacent room suitable for 30 students.
Sorted Students cooking demos (as featured on UKTV Food), HSBC, NatWest, Asda, Jobcentre Plus’ mobile unit, Energy Saving Trust, HM Revenue and Customs, Guildford Borough Council, the Energy Saving Trust and the University’s own Wellbeing Centre among others will be joining the Money Doctors in giving students advice on how to make money go further and cope with the pressures of managing their own money.
Sheila Brinkworth, Guildford Jobcentre Plus adviser services manager, said: “The money week is a great opportunity for students to ask for information and leaflets so they know how Jobcentre Plus can help them find work once they leave university.”
