SECAmb consultant paramedic appointed as Visiting Professor
Monday 23 November 2009
South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Trust (SECAmb) Director of Professional Standards and Innovation and Consultant Paramedic, Andy Newton has been appointed as a Visiting Professor of the University of Surrey.
The appointment, one of the first of its kind, further cements the Trust’s links with the Guildford-based university.
The Trust is working with the University, among others in the region, in the delivery of the Paramedic Practice degree and further education for advanced paramedic roles including Paramedic Practitioners and Critical Care Paramedics.
Andy’s role with the University of Surrey will see him contribute to research, curriculum development, teaching and the academic promotion of the ambulance service.
Andy said: “I’m really looking forward to further increasing SECAmb’s close working with the University of Surrey, meeting students and having the opportunity to teach and develop joint research opportunities.”
Professor of Clinical Practice at the University of Surrey, Tom Quinn, said: “I'm delighted with Andy's appointment, which recognises the major role he continues to play in developing the ambulance service and paramedic profession for the challenges of the 21st Century. We will be working closely with him on a number of research activities in the future to strengthen the evidence base for this crucial sector of the NHS.”
Andy was selected as the UK’s first consultant paramedic in 2005 to the then Sussex Ambulance Service. He became Clinical Director of SECAmb when Sussex, Surrey and Kent ambulance trusts merged in 2006 before taking on his current role recently.
Responsible for many of the initiatives adopted into the UK ambulance service over the last 15 years, Andy was also one of the first of five ‘flight paramedics’ seconded to the London Helicopter Emergency Service, HEMS from London Ambulance Service.
