Media Advisory: The Fall of the ‘Iron Culture’ and the Culture of Europe: 1989-2009

As much of Europe commemorates the fall of the ‘Iron Curtain’, this groundbreaking conference brings together leading figures from academia, literature and diplomacy to assess the impact of the end of European Communism on the continent’s culture.

WHO: The conference is organised by Professor Peter I. Barta of University of Surrey’s Department of English, with the support of the Austrian Cultural Forum London, the Hungarian Cultural Centre in London, and the Embassies of Austria and Hungary in the United Kingdom.
Ms Dubravka Ugrešic, internationally-renowned author of The Museum of Unconditional Surrender, Thank You for Not Reading, The Ministry of Pain and Nobody’s Home, will deliver the keynote speech, while Zdenka Becker (from Austria) and György Spiro (from Hungary), will share a special panel reading from English translations of their works.
