Surrey celebrates double success
Tuesday 1 December 2009
The University of Surrey enjoyed a double-success at this year’s annual awards of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). The awards which were recently held at the Lords Cricket ground were introduced by the Surrey’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Christopher Snowden, who is President of the IET. The event was hosted by Kate Bellingham, President of Young Engineers and a television presenter - well known for her role on Tomorrow’s World, and Philippa Forrester, also a well known BBC TV television presenter.
The IET, which has 150,000 professional engineers as members, made a number of awards to distinguished engineers for their contributions. Professor Sir Martin Sweeting received the Faraday Medal, the Institution’s most distinguished award from Professor Snowden for his outstanding contributions to the development of low-cost space satellite technology. Professor Matthew Leach, from Surrey’s Centre for Environmental Strategy, received a Premium Award for his outstanding journal paper in the area of Generation, Transmission and Distribution, jointly with colleague Tim Green.
Surrey has the unique distinction of having Faraday Medal holders in two successive years as Professor Josef Kittler in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences won the award in 2008.
