University of Surrey students help to raise £500 for local charity

On Saturday 2 May 2009, University of Surrey students donned fancy dress for a 10-mile sponsored walk through Guildford.
The students, long-time supporters of Guildford City FC, were raising money for 'Sport 4 Life UK' - a charity that provides sporting opportunities for disadvantaged children and communities in the UK. The students are avid supporters of Guildford City FC and a donation of £100 was made towards club funds.
Surrey student Matt Howell said that the walk was successful on two fronts - not only raising money for a worthy cause, but also raising the profile of the football club. He said of his fellow walkers: "Most of us are very deeply involved with the club, I myself am a member of the committee there and we really wanted to publicise the link between the university and the football team."
The students (and their large inflatable whale), attracted attention and collected donations as they walked from Guildford town centre, through the University campus, Wood Street Village and Normandy, reaching the finish line at the home ground of Ash United FC.
Barry Hitchcock, Director of Sport, praised the students' efforts saying: "They have demonstrated a great deal of commitment and I believe they are a credit to the University."
