Surrey Vice Chancellor receives Distinguished Educator Award

Tuesday 23 June 2009

Professor Christopher Snowden became this month the only UK citizen ever to receive the Distinguished Educator Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in Boston.

The award was presented at the largest microwave engineering technology event in the world, the IEEE Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit Symposium, part of the International Microwave Symposium which attracted over 10,000 delegates, and at which Professor Snowden presented the Plenary Paper.

Professor Snowden's paper was entitled 'Cost-effective Semiconductor Technologies for RF and Microwave Applications', which reported the state-of-the art in the $255 billion semiconductor industry, supported by data from leading companies such as Triquint, WIN, Freescale, Sony and Mitsubishi. His presentation included insights in to the future technology for products such as new generations of mobile phones, multigigahertz-bandwidth millimeter-wave telecommunications, telemedicine using mobile phone technology to monitor the health of individuals and low cost collision avoidance radar in cars.

The award citation recognises his "outstanding achievements as an educator, mentor and role model for microwave engineers and engineering students". Professor Snowden has published 8 books, over 300 technical papers and supervised 50 successful PhD students. The IEEE has over 500,000 professional engineering members throughout the world, with a quarter of them in Europe and celebrates its 125th year in 2009. Professor Snowden is a Vice-President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Fellow of the Royal Society and President-elect of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. He is also a Fellow of the IEEE and the IET.
