Surrey Strictly Fairtrade Tea Dance
Monday 1 February 2010
The University of Surrey will join retailers, licensees, businesses, producers, and campaigners across the nation to mark this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight, which takes place 22 February – 7 March 2010.
The University will be hosting a number of events during the fortnight, including combining forces with Fairtrade Groups in Woking and Guildford to host the ‘Surrey Strictly Fairtrade Tea Dance’ on Saturday 27 February from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. An event for all ages, there will be live music, dancing and demonstrations accompanied by Fairtrade tea and refreshments. The event will also feature a fun dance competition, split into two categories to cater for those who have danced before and for the complete amateur. Teams of any size and age may enter using the music and dance style of their choice.
Tickets are available from the University of Surrey Box Office at £4, T: 01483 686876. To register your team for the dance competition e-mail ussu.fairtrade@surrey.ac.uk
The University achieved its Fairtrade status in July 2007, and now hosts an active student Fairtrade Society. The Society’s President, Helen Thornewelle, a keen dancer herself, has taken the lead in organising this tea dance. Fairtrade universities make a commitment to raise awareness of Fairtrade and to buy and make available Fairtrade products wherever possible.
James Newby, Director of Traded Services, comments: “The University is very proud of its Fairtrade status and very keen to support initiatives such as these that are important to its students and the wider community.”
Fairtrade Fortnight aims to promote awareness and sales of Fairtrade products, building loyalty and increasing the perception that Fairtrade can be part of people’s everyday lives. Campaigns and events throughout the fortnight will communicate the positive impact Fairtrade has on producers’ lives.
