National Dance Network presents Dance3
Tuesday 2 February 2010
The National Dance Network’s pick of the freshest choreographic talent in the UK, Dance3, comes to the PATS Dance Studio at the University of Surrey in Guildford on Wednesday 10 March.
Dance3 is a new initiative intended to support choreographers when they need it most – in the early stages of their careers. It has been warmly welcomed by leading names from the dance world including Wayne McGregor and Matthew Bourne.
Wayne McGregor, artistic director of Random Dance and Resident Choreographer of The Royal Ballet, says: “Dance3 is a rare and unparalleled opportunity for a new generation of choreographers to share and tour their work around the UK.”
Matthew Bourne, artistic director of New Adventures, says: “It is vital that the next generation of choreographers, who are the life blood of dance, continue to be supported through initiatives like Dance3.“
There are three works on the bill in Guildford: A mind as Beautiful, a new work for five dancers by former Phoenix dancer Douglas Thorpe, explores the experience of schizophrenia, combining Thorpe’s trademark speed, rhythm and precision with a moving spoken narrative. Mickael Marso Riviere’s Appel, a trio for two dancers and a musician playing bansuri (flute) and tabla, is inspired in equal parts by B-boying, capoeira and contemporary dance. Darren Ellis’ Sticks and Bones is a solo for Darren and his drumsticks exploring practice and the quest for perfection. When the sticks take control is when the trouble starts!
In addition, an installation by choreographer and filmmaker Heather Eddington will be in the foyer of the theatre. A Blank Canvas blends dance, film and animation to humorous effect.
