Cellist Steven Isserlis to perform a special Anniversaries Concert at the University of Surrey

Monday 8 February 2010

World-renowned cellist, Steven Isserlis, will perform with pianist Sam Haywood at the University of Surrey on Friday, 12 February, celebrating the anniversaries of Chopin, Barber, Schumann and Dohnanyi.

Steven devised the varied programme to celebrate the bi-centenaries of Schumann and Chopin (b.1810) centenary of Barber, and the fiftieth anniversary since the birth of Dohnanyi. The chamber concerts of Isserlis’ devising are renowned, not only for the quality of performance but also for his ingenuity and innovation in programming. Steven says about the programme: “Samuel Barber and Erno von Dohnanyi wrote their only cello sonatas at the beginnings of their careers; both works are full of youthful energy, passion and originality. In contrast, the sonatas of Schumann and Chopin were written towards the end of the composers’ respective lives. Curiously, neither of these two late sonatas have achieved the popularity of the composers’ earlier pieces…I believe passionately in the genius of both works, and I am happy to celebrate the bi-centenary with these two comparatively little-known masterpieces.”

Isselis is a cellist whose passion for music transcends conventional divisions. Acclaimed worldwide for his musicality and technique alike, he is equally at home drawing the audience into his circle of friends for chamber music or in recital; delving into the historical archives to emerge with a forgotten gem; or on the concert platform with some of the world’s most prestigious orchestras and conductors. As Gramophone Magazine wrote, “the music world – and music itself – is infinitely richer for the presence of Steven Isserlis.”

Steven will be performing at the University with pianist Sam Haywood, who has also performed to high critical acclaim all over the world as concerto soloist, recitalist and chamber musican.

The recital will take place at PATS Studio One on the University of Surrey’s Stag Hill Campus, Guildford, GU2 7XH, Friday 12 February at 7.30pm.
