22nd Annual Composition/Choreographic Creative Workshop Presentations

A celebration of collaborative and creative work devised by dance and music students. The students come together over an intensive weekend of non-stop activity which tests their inventiveness and creativity. Choreographers and composers work with dancers and musicians to devise and present new work, with an opportunity for you to ask questions and find out more about the creative process.

Croser Hughes Chamber Music Award

This annual competition for the performance of chamber music with keyboard always attracts a high standard of entry and exciting repertoire. Guest adjudicator, Michael Dussek, Professor at the Royal College of Music in London, has the final say at the end of a highly-charged afternoon of music-making.

Free For All - II

An informal and fun evening that showcases the enormous range of musical styles and the huge talents of the various bands and performers within the Department of Music and Sound Recording. One of the most popular student concerts in the calendar, in its short history it has outgrown PATS and Wates House, so for the second year running, the students will stage a large scale concert in the University Hall. We can’t describe an evening which might include Irish jigs and folk music, cover versions or new works, experimental jazz, electronic improvisation and solo singer/ songwriters. All that is certain is that it will be a spectacular, eclectic show.

Lunchtime Recital

Take a mid-day break, relax or be invigorated by these short recitals. Normally given by undergraduate and postgraduate students specialising in performance, the repertoire at these concerts is extremely varied. It’s a great opportunity to hear some familiar and not so well known works. Feel free to pop down during your lunch break, if only for 20 minutes, as you may come and go between performances. Programmes for these events are not usually available far in advance but can be emailed to you a few days before the recital by Jamie Harber – j.harber@surrey.ac.uk – if requested.

Steven Isserlis is a cellist who is acclaimed worldwide for his technique and musicianship. His passionate approach imbues his work as a soloist, chamber musician and teacher. This varied programme has been devised by Steven to celebrate the composers’ special anniversaries that fall in 2010.

The University Symphony Orchestra
The University Symphony Orchestra and Choir return to Guildford Cathedral for their annual concert. Following last year’s magical performance of Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius at the Cathedral, the Symphony Orchestra and Choir, even stronger than before, will perform Beethoven’s masterpiece, his Symphony No 9.

Excerpts from one of the world’s most popular operas, Tosca by Giacomo Puccini, and Verdi’s Force of Destiny Overture will complete the programme. Under the tutelage of Russell Keable, the University Symphony Orchestra and Choir, made up of students and staff, have gone from strength to strength in recent years. Tonight they will also be joined by five professional soloists so expect another magical evening at the Cathedral.

Doric String Quartet

Haydn - String Quartet No 6 in E flat, Op 76
Korngold - String Quartet No 2 in E flat major, Op 26
Beethoven - String Quartet No 1 in F, Op 59 Rasumovsky

The Doric String Quartet is now firmly established as one of the outstanding quartets of their generation. Now in its 12th season, this young, international award-winning quartet makes a first visit to the University with a delightful programme. Haydn’s wit and Beethoven’s imagination are matched by Korngold’s lyrical and romantic second quartet. Oscar-winning Erich Korngold was a child prodigy and a professor at the State Academy of Music, where he was well-known as a composer of concert and chamber works before moving to Hollywood and creating his sweeping film scores of the 1930s and 40s.

Lunchtime Recital – Will Todd Trio

The Will Todd Trio performs regularly up and down the country, often accompanying Will Todd’s 2003 Mass in Blue with soprano Bethany Halliday. Will Todd is a composer and pianist, and trained at Bristol University where he studied composition with Raymond Warren. His extensive output includes opera, oratorio, musical theatre and orchestral music and he has worked with major opera companies, orchestras, conductors and soloists all over the UK and in the US. Will, Jim and Gareth are the best of friends and the trio is all about joint exploration and finding interesting ways to express musical ideas.

University of Surrey Chamber Choir and Orchestra

Choral music, from baroque to modern day, from one of the foremost choirs in the South of England, with chamber music interludes. Programme to include Mozart’s Requiem, a selection of songs from Finzi and a modern day premiere from the Czech composer J. V. H. Vorisek, not performed since 1824.

Joyce Dixey Preliminary Concert

This annual concert of compositions by students of the Department of Music and Sound Recording is competitively performed for an award presented by the Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (MCPS). The award will be adjudicated and presented at the final on Wednesday 5th May.

Accolades are being collected by this young French pianist who has become a rapidly rising star of the piano world. Emmanuel studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School before going to the Royal College of Music. Winning the 2009 Dudley International Piano Competition has established Emmanuel as a talent to watch and we are delighted to welcome him to the University for this special afternoon recital.

David Lovatt Award Concert with Gemini

This concert commemorates a much-loved University of Surrey student who graduated two decades ago, but who sadly died in summer 2002. David Lovatt was a keen and gifted composer, and this award in his memory complements the University’s other prizes in composition with a world premiere and CD recording of the winning work by Gemini, the University’s Artists In Residence.

Improvisation Night

This event will feature music, installations and happenings that explore the University’s famous PATS building. This will include works by final year music students and the University of Surrey Improvisation Ensemble, composed of graduates from the Free Improvisation course taught at the University. Using ways of listening that are bodily, intuitive and transpersonal, they seek to perform music that is interactional, explorative and ethical.
