‘Is that discrimination?’

Brightly coloured and thought-provoking posters around the University of Surrey campus announce a new collaborative venture involving the Student Advice Department. The Surrey Court-based service recently won £5K of funding to mount a public legal education event.
To help publicise the new Equality Act and the related theme of discrimination, Student Advice has entered into collaboration with ‘Advice Now’ and ‘Advice UK’ to organise an awareness raising event, funded by the European Community Programme for Employment and Social Solidarity and the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
A large exhibition in the Lecture Theatre Concourse will feature stands offering information on discrimination, legal rights and most importantly where to find advice and support in the community. Contributors include the Equality and Human Rights Commission, Guildford Citizens Advice Bureau, Surrey Law Centre, the Disability Law Service, plus the University of Surrey Equality and Diversity and Careers Offices.
Interesting interactive workshops for students and staff, run by external experts such as the Equality and Human Rights Commission, will cover the new Equality Act as it relates to employment, goods and services, and discrimination in housing. While discrimination is relatively rare, the aim of these sessions is to make students “equality aware” and knowledgeable about where to seek help.
