University Symphony Orchestra to perform Dvorak’s New World Symphony
Monday 17 May 2010
The University of Surrey Symphony Orchestra will be performing Dvorak’s ever popular ‘From the New World’ Symphony on Saturday 22 May 7.30 p.m. at St Saviour’s Church in Guildford. The concert will also feature Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol and Falla’s Three Dances from the Three Cornered Hat. The Symphony Orchestra consists of University staff and students. This special end of year concert will also feature two final year conducting students leading the orchestra as part of their final assessments, in addition to Russell Keable, Director of Conducting at the University of Surrey, who will conduct Dvorak’s From the New World Symphony.
Composed in 1893 during his visit to the United States, Dvorak’s From the New World Symphony was an immediate success and has maintained its popular appeal by virtue of its seemingly inexhaustible flow of melody and sparkling orchestration. A wonderful piece for a first time listener, it also maintains enough interest and complexity for the seasoned concert goer. The glittering orchestration of Rimsky-Korsakov and Spanish flare of Manuel de Falla will add a lively twist to the evening.
This is the University’s final symphony orchestra concert of the academic year, so please do come along to support the orchestra and conducting students. Interval refreshments will also follow an end of term summer theme, with Pimms and Lemonade being served on, what we hope will be, a lovely spring evening.
Tickets are £10, £5 for students and can be booked from the University Box Office on 01483 686876 or bought at the door.
