Surrey Space Centre highlighted by the European Parliament

Monday 28 June 2010

The successful links between industry and the University' of Surrey's space research have been highlighted in a video made for the European Parliament.

The report shows the unique work being carried out between research students at the Surrey Space Centre and SSTL, the UK's innovative small satellite manufacturer which was the most valuable spin-out company from a British university.

SSTL was bought by the international firm EADS Astrium last year.  The sale supported the already-strong presence that Guildford and the south-east of England have in the aeronautical and space industries, creating a centre of expertise for space technology. Many of the University's students go on to work with SSTL, so the relationship promotes career development as well as research. The relationship between the University, The Surrey Space Centre and SSTL was examined in the film for the European Parliament, as part of a larger debate about the possibility of 'brain drain' in Europe.
