Surrey Senior Research Fellow made MBE
Thursday 1 July 2010
Stephen Halloran, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Surrey and Director of Bowel Cancer Screening Southern Programme Hub, has been made an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list.
A life dedicated to healthcare science has been recognised with the award of an MBE for the man responsible for establishing a vital bowel cancer screening initiative in Guildford.
Stephen set up the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme’s Southern Hub in 2006, based at the University’s Postgraduate Medical School. The hub now serves 14.3 million people across the South and, under Stephen’s watch, more than 1,400 bowel cancers have been identified.
He described the award as "most unexpected and a great honour", adding: "I don’t often receive a letter marked ‘Strictly Confidential’ from the Cabinet Office.
“My work, particularly that associated with bowel cancer screening, provides abundant reward and so being made a Member of the Order of the British Empire is, I think, a reflection of the fantastic contribution made in the UK by NHS healthcare scientists.”
