David Sheard awarded honorary doctorate by the University of Surrey

David Sheard, internationally acclaimed dementia care consultant, has been awarded an honorary doctorate degree from the University of Surrey. The awards ceremony recently took place at Guildford Cathedral.
The degree of Doctor of the University, honoris causa (DUniv), was presented to Mr Sheard by Professor Karen Bryan, Head of Health and Social Care, and conferred upon him by Dr John Forrest, Pro-Chancellor of the University of Surrey in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the field of dementia care development.
Mr Sheard is the Director of Dementia Care Matters. He has developed a reputation as a challenging and motivational speaker and as a leading dementia care consultant in the UK, USA and Canada. He previously was for ten years an external training consultant to the Alzheimer’s Society. Dementia Care Matters is an internationally recognised leader in training and service development to improve quality of life for people with dementia, particularly in care home environments.
Mr Sheard has been a Senior Visiting Fellow at the University of Surrey since 2003. Since 2004, an annual conference on dementia care has been held at the University as a partnership between Dementia Care Matters, the Journal of Dementia Care and University of Surrey.
On receiving the award, Mr Sheard commented: “Feelings matter most in dementia care. I am extremely honoured that the University of Surrey has recognised Dementia Care Matters’ work in promoting quality of life. Our work will continue at the University in emphasising that dementia care is all about emotional care of people living and working together in care homes.”
