Surrey academics at semi centennial Royal Society convocation

The convocation of the Fellowship of the Royal Society was recently held at the Royal Festival Hall in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen and Their Royal Highnesses The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince William, The Princess Royal and The Duke of Kent.
In attendance were several members of University of Surrey academic staff including Dr Goran Mashanovich and Royal Society Fellow Professor Alf Adams, both from the University's Advanced Technology Institute.
Dr Mashanovich was awarded a Royal Society Research Fellowship in 2008 and has research interests which include silicon photonic waveguides, couplers, filters and modulators. He has initiated research in mid-IR group IV photonics recently.
Dr Mashanovich commented: “The convocation emphasised the global importance of science to solve some of humanities key challenges and endorses a culture of ideas exchange and collaboration. For me, this was the highlight of the event, a public demonstration of the world class research that takes place in UK universities which is supported by the Royal Society.”
The convocation celebrated the 350th anniversary of the Royal Society. Convocations of the Royal Society take place only once every fifty years with the next one taking place in 2060. Guests included Fellows, their guests, and guests of the Society, including the heads of foreign academies and other significant representatives of the international science community.
Professor Sir Martin Sweeting and Professor Christopher Snowden, Surrey Vice-Chancellor, are also Royal Society Fellows.
