Space firm’s link with the University of Surrey nominated for ‘The Engineer’ Awards 2010

Thursday 16 September 2010

The successful collaboration between scientists at the University's Surrey Space Centre and the space industry giant EADS Astrium has been nominated for an award by the prestigious industry magazine The Engineer.

The University of Surrey and EADS Astrium entered into a strategic partnership, following the sale of Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) to EADS Astrium in January 2009.

The collaboration between EADS Astrium & University of Surrey is unique. This long term partnership provides a stable platform for innovative exchange and collaboration.

The Engineer Technology & Innovation Awards 2010 will turn the spotlight on the fruits of this process, and the research collaboration.

The driving force behind the 5 year strategic partnership is for EADS Astrium to invest in and exploit innovative, novel space technology research.

Under the partnership, both EADS Astrium and University of Surrey staff identify innovative concepts and technologies which are then jointly proposed for assessment by the Astrium CTO Office.

The mutual benefits derived result in a working environment open to new ideas. Students and academics are able to make their ideas ‘fly’ with the support of their industrial sponsors.

EADS Astrium takes these ideas to ‘proof of concept’ level and beyond, benefiting the UK economy as a whole and inspiring the next generation of engineers.

The Engineer Awards 2010 will be held at the Royal Society in London in December
