Eighth British Contemporary Piano Competition
Founder and Artistic Director Philip Mead MA ARAM

The British Contemporary Piano Competition was founded in 1988 by Philip Mead to promote contemporary piano music and to help the careers of those pianists who wish to play it. The competition is unique in dealing only with piano music of the last hundred years with an emphasis on music composed since 1976. Competitors come from all over the world and half the repertoire is own choice, so the pianists bring their own favourite pieces, which adds a truly international flavour to the whole event. Many of today’s leading contemporary pianists have been past prize winners and eminent musicians serve on the jury.

Swarm

Devised by composer Neil Luck and choreographer Aya Kobayashi, and developed during an intensive week of rehearsals with student composers, musicians, choreographers and dancers, this performance marks the culmination of a collaborative project between the Department of Music and Sound Recording, and Department of Dance, Film and Theatre. Concerned with investigating methods of tactile and non-tactile interaction between dancers and musicians, Swarm will explore the possibilities of breaking down the differences between musician and dancer by finding potential areas of overlap and communication, attempting to redefine the role of ‘performer’ as something more flexible, malleable, and collaborative.

HAYDN
Paukenmesse

BACH
Motet ‘Komm, Jesu, komm’, BWV229

PERGOLESI/DURANTE
Magnificat

The magnificent Paukenmesse, also known as the Mass in Time of War, was one of a series of major works Haydn composed in the 1790s towards the very end of his life; music full of the vitality of youth and the wisdom of old age. Please note the Haydn will be performed liturgically as part of the communion service, starting at 9:45 a.m.

The grandeur of Bach's unaccompanied motet is set against the bright colours of Pergolesi's beautiful Magnificat, now thought to be the work of his teacher Francesco Durante. Both these works will be performed in a short concert at 11:30 a.m., following on from the service.
