Students help raise £40,000 for Sport Relief
Tuesday 23 November 2010
Two students at the University of Surrey have helped to raise more than £40,000 for disadvantaged people by organising a charity fun run.
More than 1200 participants took part in the Guildford Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile 2010 held in March this year. Now the final figure raised by the run and other associated events has been announced as £43,981.68.
The event was organised by two students, Chris Whitehead and Georgina Hancock, along with a volunteer team of 60 students, who all ran or walked either a one, three or six mile course.
The money raised by Sport Relief helps disadvantaged people in the UK and across the world to turn their lives around.
Chris Whitehead, Student Guildford Sport Relief Manager, said: “I enjoyed having the opportunity to work with and meet many people that I would probably have otherwise never met including University students and staff, Union staff and representatives, local media, local organisations and community groups and other people from around Guildford and Surrey.
“It was a fantastic networking opportunity in a social, educational and professional sense but most of all it was great fun and a lot of hard work for a very good cause.
“When the next opportunity to get involved with Sport Relief comes in 2012 I would absolutely encourage people to get involved, including those who did so this year. “
The event started and finished at the piazza at The University of Surrey campus and the then Mayor of Guildford, Pauline Searle, and local Councillor Chris Ward started the races.
