Surrey Symphony Orchestra and Choir celebrates Mahler centenary

Tuesday 23 November 2010

The University of Surrey Symphony Orchestra and Choir will be performing at St. Saviour’s Church, Guildford on Saturday 04 December, 7:30 p.m., and the majestic centrepiece of the evening will be Mahler’s glowing and optimistic 4th Symphony.  Come along and enjoy some spine-tingling music in the wonderful acoustic of this lovely Church in central Guildford.

Under the tutelage of Russell Keable the University Orchestra and Choir have continued to excel in recent years.  As Clive Williamson (Head of Performance) wrote, following their last performance at
St. Saviour’s Church, Guildford, “the music-making was of the first order throughout: choir, orchestra, orchestral and vocal soloists were absolutely outstanding.”  The Orchestra and Choir are made up of students and staff from across the University community.

Completing the programme will be Finzi’s choral cantata, Et In Terra Pax.  Setting words by Robert Bridges and verses from St Luke’s Gospel, Finzi’s piece vividly brings to life the chill of Christmas night in the fields and the sudden exhilaration of the Angels’ message to the shepherds.  Join us for some great music to welcome in the festive season, complete with interval mulled wine and mince pies to warm the cockles.  It always offers a fantastic evening out for all the family.

Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling the University Box Office on 01483 686876, Mon-Fri 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Tickets are £10, £5 students.  The concert will take place on Saturday 04 December, 7:30 p.m., at St. Saviour’s Church, Woodbridge Road, Guildford, GU1 4QD.
