9/11: Ten years on what lessons have we learnt?
Tuesday 22 March 2011
Experts in terrorism and police counter-terrorism measures are meeting at the University of Surrey to evaluate the lessons we have learnt about terrorism and counter-terrorism and what progress still needs to be made.
The panel will include Professor Richard Jackson, Director of the Centre for Critical Terrorism Studies at Aberystwyth University, Asim Quereshi from the human rights organisation Cageprisoners, alongside Tim Parsons, former Chief Inspector of the City of London Police.
The panel will discuss the difficulties in balancing security and civil liberties.
Professor Marie Breen-Smyth, of the Politics Department, will chair the roundtable on this highly sensitive and topical issue which is set to give a challenging insight into the nature and impact of terrorism in the 21st Century.
Professor Breen-Smyth said: “Perspectives on the successes and failures of the policies and practices instituted after 9/11 and indeed after the London bombings vary across sectors. This event provides a chance to compare insights and debate the lessons we need to learn for our future security and cohesion as a society.”
The event will be hosted by the Department of Politics and will take place at the University’s Griffiths Lecture Theatre (LTD) on Wednesday 23rd March 2011 from 2pm to 4:30pm.
The public, staff and students are welcome at the event.
