Surrey dance students host an exciting end-of-year celebration of dance
Tuesday 24 May 2011
Surrey dance students will be hosting an end-of-year extravaganza celebrating a range of dance styles on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th June, at the University of Surrey in Guildford, and invite audiences to come and celebrate with them. Showcasing the talented dancers and choreographers from the University’s Dance and Cultures degree programme, these shows celebrate the wide variety of dance styles taught at Surrey.
Featuring short pieces in styles as wide ranging as African dance, Kathak – Classical Indian dance, Contemporary, Ballet, Street and Hip Hop, the shows offer a great showcase for young aspiring dance students who may wish to continue their dance studies at university as well as anyone who enjoys the multi-faceted aesthetics of dance in all its forms.
The evening will include brand new pieces choreographed by Surrey’s dance students and two specially commissioned pieces by Jean Johnson-Jones, Lecturer in Dance Studies, and by recent Surrey dance graduate Jo Read. Woking Dance Festival selected Jo for their ‘Emerging Associate Artist Scheme’ this year, and her Hip Hop piece, The North Wind and the Sun is her first Woking Dance Festival commission. Inspired by Aesop’s Fable, this hip-hop dance tale tells the story of a girl who gets caught in a game between the wind and the sun – an exciting family fun-filled dance. Water Study, staged by Jean Johnson-Jones is an ensemble piece designed for ten female dancers, a reconstruction of a famous work by Doris Humphrey.
The end-of-year shows always offer an exciting celebration of dance performance by young emerging artists, so do please come along to the shows this June and enjoy the rich diversities that dance has to offer at Surrey.
Tickets can be booked in advance from the University Box Office on 01483 686 876 at £6, £3 for students and children, Monday – Friday, 9am-7pm. The dance shows will take place in the PATS Building Dance Studio on the University of Surrey’s Stag Hill Campus, Guildford, GU2 7XH, at 7.30pm on Friday 10th & Saturday 11th June. A matinee performance will also take place on Saturday 11th June at 2pm. For more information on the End-of-Year shows, the venue or the Dance degree course at Surrey, please visit:
