Experts in pioneering technology gather to focus on burgeoning hi-tech market
Thursday 2 June 2011
A high-level conference of experts in electronics, photonics and electrical systems will be held at the University of Surrey to examine ways to foster better relationships between industry and academia and to help speed up the use of innovative technology into markets.
Globally the areas of electronics, photonics, and electrical systems are worth many trillions of pounds. Experts gathered at Surrey hope to lead the way in this market with a centre to forge future developments in the industry which affects all of us through everything from smart phones to computer technology.
With the importance of manufacturing as a powerhouse to the economy resurfacing on the Governments’ agenda it is appropriate that the theme of this years’ annual S2K conference event is Innovative Manufacturing Processes in Micro and Nano electronics applications. JEMI UK Ltd, Nanotechnology KTN and the University of Surrey KTA will organise this event on 21-22 June 2011, with confirmed speakers from Future Horizons, Technology Strategy Board, Fraunhofer, IMEC, etc.
Mike Smyth, Chairman of JEMI UK Ltd commented “The theme of the event is aligned with the announcements made by Government in their recent Growth Review, which targets the expansion of Britain’s manufacturing sector and positioning the UK as Europe’s leading exporter of high value goods. We are very fortunate to have secured Bernie Capraro of Intel as Chairman for the 2011 S2K event.”
Professor Ravi Silva, Director of the Advanced Technology Institute (ATI) at the University said: “We are all excited by the possibilities of new collaborations in this burgeoning part of the hi-tech economy which will have tangible results. All of us are waiting to hear more from the TSB as to their plans on Technology Innovation Centres in South East England.”
“We welcome the decision to have a leading conference of experts in this area at the University of Surrey and hope that it will forge important relationships with industry to improve and expand the electronics industry and high-level research in the region.”
This year’s S2K event will build on the successful format developed over the past 2 years of incorporated associated events with the main conference and which has resulted in a very successful and well attended event will a great level of engagement. The ATI will be holding their Open Day on 20 June at the University of Surrey.

About the ATI:
The ATI has foundations based on its acknowledged world-leading research, such as the development of the now ubiquitous strained-layer semiconductor laser in the 1980s and realisation of buried silicon oxide (SIMOX) in the 1990s on which current semiconductor technologies rely. In addition, it has helped create nano-technologies to address the needs of tomorrow with world-leading activities in CNT-based technologies, Si-optoelectronics and the next-generation materials and devices for energy generation and spintronic technologies.
The Advanced Technology Institute is an interdisciplinary research centre dedicated to advancing next-generation electronic and photonic device technologies and will be holding their Open Day on 20 June 2011 at the University of Surrey.
