Surrey Storm through to Superleague Grand Final

Tuesday 7 June 2011

Surrey Storm produced a dominant display in Oldham to overcome Northern Thunder 48 - 64 and book their place in The FIAT Netball Superleague Grand Final.

With another herd of travelling supporters who had made the long journey up the country, Storm pulled together another composed, full-team performance to progress through to England’s showpiece final.
After a close opening quarter, Storm's form and momentum going into the game eventually showed, as they pulled away from a strong Thunder side with great work throughout the court.
Storm now face local rival Hertfordshire Mavericks in the Fiat Netball Superleague Grand Final in Hatfield, Hertfordshire on Thursday 9 June at 8pm.

Storm captain Greenway sportingly sympathised with her beaten opponents, she remarked "I said to them (Thunder) that I really do feel for them because if they kept their squad together without any injuries this year they would have gone on to win it, but unfortunately that's sport.

"We came out here with a job to do and it was nice to get a big score and nice not to drop off at the end and keep pressuring them. I thought that Gemma's (Cosentino) drives through the court were fantastic and her second phase was spot.”

Coach Mary Beardwood said, “It was a hard fought game right the way through, and even though the score was 16 in the end, it was never easy. I think that the third quarter we really put our foot on the pedal and scored off virtually every centre pass.

“The girls keep upping their game and doing what we ask of them and that’s a great position to be in as a coach. We have had a great run of form to reach the final and now it is anyone’s game. We are really looking forward to facing Mavericks in Thursday’s final.

“It's going to be a really tight game, and last time out we drew, so I think it should be a really good spectacle for TV."

Coverage of the Fiat Netball Superleague Grand Final will be shown live on Thursday 9 June from 7.30pm on Sky Sports 3.
