School science challenge at University of Surrey
Wednesday 15 June 2011
GCSE pupils from four Surrey schools will take part in the Waverley Science and Technology Challenge on the University of Surrey’s campus on 20 June. The Challenge will give the pupils a taste of what it’s like to work in industry.
One hundred pupils from Broadwater School, Glebelands School, Rodborough Technology College and Woolmer Hill Technology College – schools that belong to the Waverley Federation – will compete in a series of science and technology related tests.
The Challenge, hosted by the University of Surrey, will require pupils from different schools to work alongside each other as part of a team of four.
Clare Harvey, the University’s Physics Outreach Officer, says: “The real challenge for the pupils will be learning to work with others that they’ve just met. We want them to get a real ‘taste’ of what it’s like when people from different backgrounds come together to solve practical problems in industry.”
The teams will be asked to perform three out of a possible four challenges. The challenges include devising and building a paper bridge; assembling and programming a robot; constructing and racing a model vehicle; and designing and building a self-righting buoy.
The winning teams will receive their awards from Councillor Richard Gates and Mrs Evelyn Gates, the Mayor and Mayoress of Waverley.
