Tackling world problems through an academic partnership

Tuesday 30 August 2011

University Global Partnership Network (UGPN) launches at the University of Surrey.A new learning and research partnership will be launched at the University of Surrey at the end of this month.

The University Global Partnership Network (UGPN) sets out to create a foundation for international collaboration enabling academics and students from some of the world’s top universities to work together on issues of global importance.

Over time, the UGPN will give serious international experience both to the research communities and student bodies of all partner organisations.   Current joint projects already underway include research into climate change, care for the aged, cardiovascular disease, neuropsychology, political intervention and veterinary science.

To mark the launch, representatives from the founding partner institutions - the University of Surrey, North Carolina State University (USA) and the University of São Paulo (Brazil) – will be participating in a special themed programme of events at the Stag Hill campus from 30 August to 1 September, alongside invited guests from the College of Engineering at Seoul National University (South Korea), industrial partners and international observers.

Professor Colin Grant, Pro Vice-Chancellor of International Relations at the University of Surrey comments:

“The UGPN aims to create innovative solutions to world problems based on the expertise of a larger network – not just one University going it alone. The UGPN’s research collaborations, joint publications, curriculum innovations and the exchange of staff and students are already enhancing research and teaching at each partner institution. The end of August not only marks the official launch of the UGPN but is also the first business meeting for all our partners. We are very much looking forward to welcoming our international colleagues on campus.”

Dr Bailian Li, Vice Provost for International Affairs at North Carolina State University comments:

"The UGPN is a great platform for NC State’s new strategic plan to enhance local and global engagement through focused strategic partnerships. By working together, even across different continents, we can leverage our complementary strengths in research and education to solve the grand challenges of a global society."

Professor Adnei Melges de Andrade, Vice-President for International Relations at the University of São Paulo notes: “After many years of academic collaboration with universities worldwide, it is time to concentrate efforts. We have to take advantage of the fact that different approaches to problem solving are connected with different cultural environments. Multicultural team research and shared education in the UGPN will represent a new strength for the participating universities.”

Santander is a collaborative partner for the UGPN through the Santander Universities network.
