Leading physics expert to explain the entire universe at free lecture
Thursday 19 January 2012
The inaugural Lewis Elton lecture at the University of Surrey will be delivered by one of the world’s greatest living physicists, Sir Roger Penrose, who will describe a new theory of the origins of the universe. The lecture is free and open to the pubic as well as staff and students of the University.
Professor Sir Roger Penrose will explain his theory that there was not just one Big Bang – the standard explanation of the beginnings of the universe which created everything from one single event where matter was jettisoned from a single point for all time – but that there were a series of such events.
He will give the first of an annual series of special lectures at the University called “Seeing through the Big Bang into another world” on Thursday, 16th February at 6pm.
The University of Surrey’s Professor Jim Al-Khalili, presenter of successful and lauded television programmes for the BBC, said: “His idea is basically that the big bang wasn’t the start of everything but just the birth of our own phase of the Universe in a hierarchy of big bangs popping out of previous universes. This is very exciting stuff.”
“He is one of the world’s greatest living physicists and I am very excited that our first Lewis Elton Lecture will be delivered by him.”
The new annual Lewis Elton Lectures are named in honour of Professor Lewis Elton who will introduce Sir Roger before the lecture and speak of his 6o year association with the University of Surrey.
Professor Elton came to England in 1939 as a refugee from Prague. He gained his PhD in Theoretical Physics at UCL and went on to become head of Physics at Battersea College of Technology accompanying it in its transplantation to the University of Surrey.
