Monday 6 February 2012
Celebrate Surrey is a programme of public events which recognises the contribution that both the University of Surrey and Surrey Sports Park make to the intellectual, economic and cultural life of the local, national and global community.
Taking place during the year when the UK hosts the Olympic and Paralympic Games, ‘Celebrate Surrey’ also provides the opportunity to mark and participate in these wider national celebrations.
Paul Blanchard, Chief Executive at Surrey Sports Park comments: “Celebrate Surrey aims to build and strengthen awareness among local, national and international audiences about our contribution to intellectual life, the arts, sport and well-being at a variety of levels. The University of Surrey is a world-class provider of learning, teaching and research, and our state-of-the-art Surrey Sports Park is a training camp for a number of Olympic teams and athletes. We hope that our programme of lively events will provide food for thought and entertainment during this important year.”
The programme includes everything from public lectures and arts performances to Olympic-themed masterclasses and sporting fixtures and competitions. Event highlights include: a year long celebration of the arts including dance and music performances, plays and musicals, films screenings and poetry readings; iFestival (International Festival), a two week celebration of culture and diversity on campus; Surrey Youth Games at the Surrey Sports Park; Alan Turing Centenary Celebrations; Science Circus; and participation in local celebrations for the UK Olympic torch relay.
