Dean of Guildford Cathedral awarded an honorary degree by University of Surrey

Wednesday 18 July 2012

The Reverend Victor Stock, Dean of Guildford Cathedral, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Surrey at a special ceremony.

He was ordained in 1970, he was first a curate in Pinner and then Chaplain of the University of London’s Church of Christ the King, Gordon Square.

He was Rector of St Mary-le-Bow in the City of London from 1986 until his current appointment in 2002 as Dean of Guildford Cathedral. He will retire as Dean of Guildford on 31 July 2012, but he will be made dean emeritus.

The University’s Jewish chaplain, Alex Goldberg, said in his citation at the degree ceremony at Guildford Cathedral: “Victor has been a great supporter of the University of Surrey. He brought with him to Guildford a unique understanding of academic institutions having been the University of London’s Residential Chaplain.

“He has championed our proposed Multi-faith Centre and gave us an opportunity to present the project to The Queen. Her Majesty told us on that occasion that we were ahead of the game. Those comments are equally true of Victor Stock.”
