Public debate on the future of the European Union: has it passed its sell-by date?

Monday 5 November 2012

As the European Union faces its sternest crisis and its support in the UK falls, experts including from the University of Surrey join a public debating event this month to ask what happens next.

The event is part of Politics Month, organised by the School of Politics, and will attract a diverse audience of members of the public, policy-makers, journalists and academics.

It will also mark the formal launch of the Centre for Research on the European Matrix (CRonEM).

Sir Stephen Wall, former Permanent Representative of the UK at the EU and CRonEM Advisory Board member, will ask: 'Has the EU Passed its Sell-by Date?’

While Dr Richard Corbett, member of the cabinet of Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, will counter with 'Are We Heading for a Two-Tier Europe?'

The event takes place on Thursday 15 November 2012, 18:00 to 19:30 at Europe House, 32 Smith Square, London SW1P 3EU and it is open to the public, staff, students.

“With the EU in crisis, research into the integration process has never been more vital. This debate will encourage reflection about where the EU is going, and where it should go.

“The two speakers are both leading EU policy-makers from the UK, so I’m also looking forward to a discussion of Britain’s Euro-future – and if it has one”, said Professor Alex Warleigh-Lack, Professor of EU Politics, University of Surrey, and Executive Director of CRonEM.

Editors' Notes

The Centre for Research on the European Matrix (CRonEM) is a new multidisciplinary research centre housed in the School of Politics at the University of Surrey.

CRonEM organises a series of research seminars, an annual conference and other events aimed at outreach beyond academia, particularly in the Surrey region. We also welcome proposals from visiting scholars with research interests that reflect our research agenda.

CRONEM was previously known as the Centre for Research on Nationalism, Ethnicity and Multiculturalism.
